DAY 7, THE LAST DAY:

I meant to buy Christmas presents today, but I ended up getting books for myself instead. XD Well, it's not Christmas yet so I have time! Anyway, I visited the secondhand bookstores again and got three novels:

The King Must Die by Mary Renault (1 €)
Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris (in Finnish: Herrasmiehiä ja huijareita, 1,40 €)
Isabella by Kaari Utrio (in Finnish, 1,40 €)

I haven't read anything by Renault yet, but since I keep hearing good things about her historical novels, I don't mind buying them as long as they're cheap. I now have three of her novels and I keep hoping that I'll have time and interested to read them eventually.

I haven't read anything by Harris either, and neither have I heard anything about that particular novel. The back cover sounded interesting enough (a black comedy, a murder mystery in a boys' school, kind of expecting subtext here... *cough* what?) so I figured that I might as well buy it. If I don't like it, I'll give it to Dad and see if he does.

Kaari Utrio is a famous Finnish author who's written tons of historical romances and a few nonfiction books. I think I've read most of her work in my teens, and they're entertaining enough. They're pretty good as far as historical novels go, though no one should never, ever take them too seriously or as an accurate portrayl of a specific period. Still, at least she gets something right unlike most authors.

And happy dragon news, not that all (most) of you care. :P )

And now the meme is done, and I'll stop spamming everyone. :P

The loot

So I bought two manga volumes and three books. ) recommended it some time ago.

Never to be said that your opinions don't matter!

Melusine by Sarah Monette

I haven't read this either but it looks like I will soon: the weather is looking suspicious again and there just might be a thunderstorm coming (the reason I didn't post on Thursday or yesterday).

I bought this because a) it has a half-naked man on the cover and b) when I randomly opened it, there was a m/m scene. Not that the blurb sounded all that bad, but I probably wouldn't have bought this if it didn't have buttsexing in it. Yes, I am as shallow as a kiddie pool.

Hamlet

My gods, that is a great masterpiece of western literature? Just let me laugh, all quiet and malicious.

I wasn't even halfway down the main character's first Ode for Whining monologue when I wanted to strangle him with his own intestines. It didn't get any better when he lost his mind: then he was annoying and mad. I swear, I could hear Sasuke all through his emo speeches of getting revenge and killing his uncle.

There was one slightly confusing scene when I thought Ofelia (Ophelia in English? I'm too lazy to check.) was on fire. It said: (Ofelia palaa olkia hiuksissaan). That can mean two things: either Ofelia comes back with straws in her hair, or Ofelia burns with straws in her hair. I was wondering how she could keep on talking until I realized that she was not, in fact, on fire.

I was hoping that there'd be at least one character I could like but no. The ones that came closest were Claudius and Horatio, the latter because he didn't die like the rest of the idiots (although he did try). Claudius had potential, what with killing his brother and marrying the widow and all, but in the end he was fucking stupid too.

Speaking of the widow, what was it with all the condemning Gertrud because he married his late husband's brother? Claudius did inherit the title. Marriages like that bloody well happened so much it was common, even as late as in the late 18th/early 19th century.  Sure, the mourning lasted usually a whole year but exceptions did exist. Gertrud wasn't that different from other women.

In conclusion: a great tragedy my ass. *shakes head* What made it tolerable was the aforemantioned Hamlet/Sasuke connection and The Tragedye of Sanlet, Prince of Denmark. I read an act of Hamlet and then an act of Sanlet, and the latter actually followed the plot of the play (with much snark).

Well, he's definitely pointy in this pic.

In other news, I finally gave in and bought Robin Hobb's Fool's Fate. I'm not so sure what to think about that.
