Close the Book
The book was only to lead people astray by making it look like Kurama had a reason to stay awake. Shiori had a rather annoying habit to appear suddenly just when he thought she was sleeping, and after only his speed had saved them both from an embarrassment a few years ago, he’d decided it was better to wait for an hour to make sure she was asleep.
Not that the book wasn’t interesting, but a blank paper would have come to the same thing since Kurama wasn’t paying any attention to it. Sitting on his bed and seemingly concentrating on reading, his mind was absorbed in other thought. Mainly on how long he still had to wait.
It was raining and Kurama had almost made a bet with himself of how long it would take until there’d be movement outside of the window. Almost, because he knew the knock wouldn’t come until his family was securely between their sheets and deeply asleep.
Even though Kurama knew that, he never waited patiently. A familiar youki approaching the house made him finally close the book and before he had gotten himself out of the bed, there was a quiet knock. The smile on his face was honestly delighted when he opened the window and stepped aside.
“Hello.”
He didn’t get a verbal answer but that didn’t matter. When Hiei’s feet touched the rug, they were already dried up by his youki and that told more than words would have.
***
In my mind that made sense at the time. Hiei didn't want to wet Kurama's room. *shrug*
