YYH ficlet

I stumbled upon this challenge and a plot bunny attacked me. Not that there's a lot of a plot, really, just Hiei, surrounded by snow and standing next to our university.

This hasn't been betaread so if you notice any mistakes, tell me.

Title: Lost
Rating: PG? PG-13? Swearing and the tiniest bit of implied H/K
Disclaimer: Unfortunately they're not mine.
Summary: Hiei may be lost now but it's Koenma's future we should worry about.

Lost

"What the fuck?" weren’t the friendliest words Hiei had said by that day. At that moment, however, they were much nicer than what was spinning inside his head and battling to get out.

He was standing in the snow. Literally. It was up to his knees and his own body heat was beginning to melt it into disgusting slush. Since Hiei was not attracted to wet clothes (unless Kurama was inside them), he lowered his temperature until the snow stayed nice and solid.

He was definitely still in the human world. The greasy and heavy smell of machinery proved that, although it was subdued compared to what he had to suffer usually. Also, the lighted, human-filled building in front of him was a big help on concluding where he was.

Outside the building it was dark which would’ve normally meant it was either night or early morning. Instincts told Hiei that it was daytime and that he was not in Japan anymore.

And those western people were rather hard to miss, too. They were all relatively young, bustling inside the building and wandering outside it in heavy clothing like the coldness was as normal as breathing. Hiei wasn’t particularly affected by cold but observing people had led him to believe that they felt it and that it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Weaklings.

Hiei judged the distance between the ground he was standing on and the roof of the building, and snorted. As easy as stealing a cigaret from Yuusuke. Easier, in fact. The boy could be damn possessive and vicious when his smoke was threatened. A moment later Hiei was watching down, feeling unusually confused.

Where the hell had Koenma’s portal sent him this time? The little god didn’t make that sort of mistakes often, thanks to his numerous oni who were the ones actually making the necessary calculations. Well, there had been that amusing incident with a crocodile pool but that hadn’t been their fault, even Hiei admitted that.

Hiei removed the band around his head with a sight. The years after getting the Jagan had taught him to use it effortlessly but it felt like a waste to use it for something like this. Concentrating, Hiei opened the third eye and expanded his senses.

"Mitä helvettiä?" [1]

"No voi herrajestas, anna se tänne..." [2]

The buzzing sound was getting worse every moment when the strange words flashed inside his mind. There was no sense in them, at least none that Hiei knew and contrary to popular belief, he did speak several human languages. He just didn’t see any reason to reveal it to anyone. Besides, he’d never hear the end of it if they’d know he’d seen the (little) trouble to learn something human voluntarily.

And then he heard words he could actually understand.

"...don’t know what he meant. It still doesn’t make any sense to me."

"It depends on the culture, I guess. I didn’t understand it either but they did. At least they didn’t laugh to our faces when you asked."

"No, they just got that annoyingly polite look. The one they use when they explain something that’s obvious to themselves but not to poor foreigner us. Bloody Finns."

"Oh, don’t be rude..."

Hiei closed the Jagan and frowned. Finns? That rang a tiny bell. He tried to recall where he’d heard it while tying the headband back. Most likely it was connected to Kurama and his useless, time-consuming homework. No, it wasn’t that. Hiei’s frown deepened. It had something to do with Kuwabara. Yes, and music.

Suddenly his eyes widened. He was that far away? Then his expression darkened. He was not walking back to Japan. Koenma’d better sent someone after him soon or the infant would be one demon short of detectives. Hiei scowled and settled on the roof.

[1]"What the hell?"
[2]"Oh for heaven's sake, give it here..."

For the record, I know next to nothing of Japan's climate. A quick Googling and I gathered that along the Pacific coast it's often sunny and dry in winter, and that temperature rarely drops below 0°C.

Oh... That's nice, thanks!

"Since Hiei was not attracted to wet clothes (unless Kurama was inside them)"

Er... heh... I like these two together.
